Extreme Poverty

Of the 3.5 million coconut farmers in the Philippines, 90% live below the poverty line. Most:

kids are malnourished
drop out of school by 7th grade
drink unclean water

The Root:
"Copra Slavery"

Farmers are given corrupt pricing and predatory loans that trap them in debt. Locals call this "copra slavery".

Desperate Choices

With their backs against the wall, their options are:
1) Give their land to pay off the debt
2) Send a parent or child to find a job far away

At Risk of Trafficking

This desperate search for income often leads to abuse, rape and trafficking.
