Meet Jocie, a working mother with a dream to buy land and care for her children. She comes from a family of 6 siblings where her parent’s livelihood was fishing and working in the fields. Long days of manual labor outside left her parents exhausted and barely able to keep up with feeding their children, let alone sending them to school. Jocie was thankful to complete high school as this was not an opportunity for some of her older siblings.
Tragically, her youngest sibling tragically passed away due to poor health in their circumstances and Jocie was heartbroken there was not more she could do. Living in a makeshift dwelling, Jocie’s dream was born to provide her family with a safe and secure place of their own.
She started her working career in a city away from her hometown as a caretaker so she could contribute money to her parents. After a year she changed jobs and met her husband. As they began their life together, Jocie knew she wanted to continue working to help provide for their needs. It was important to her to have some independence, but she knew she needed a different work environment.
That was when she joined the team at Dignity and found herself with more than just a paycheck. Jocie was amazed that she would be provided with benefits as well, and she thrived in the community. Her children do not have to worry about having food on the table like she did, and they will be able to finish school. Having a stable income has taken away her family’s stress about meeting their needs and saving up. Jocie’s personal and social life have also been transformed by her new friendships, and she is excited to continue growing in her role.
